LITHIUM IRON PHOSPHATE POWER SYSTEM
LITHIUM IRON PHOSPHATE POWER SYSTEM
AVAILABILITY ( THE RATIO OF CHARGE TIME TO RUN TIME)
Availability is the key metric for a mobile computer workstation. It has two primary components :
RUN TIME
Pretty simple concept, the longer the run time, the longer it can be used as a mobile workstation.
Users assume run time has two variables, the number and power draw of the devices you are using and the size of the battery powering the devices.
The mistake most users make is assuming that if they for instance, just use a laptop computer ( Low power draw ) with an extended life battery ( Lots of relative amps ) life is good and the use case is met. (Not necessarily ) OK the first time you put the system on line, fully charged, the use case is probably met, but typically not after that...WHY?
CHARGE TIME, THE SECOND COMPONENT
Laptop systems typically come with a 2 to 3 amp charger ( Power brick) and even if you use a lithium battery the AVAILABILITY RATIO ( charge time to mobile time ) is 1:1, or in other words, it takes one hour of charge time to yield one hour of run time.
Trust us...that will not meet the use case. OK, you have a well trained staff that plugs the cart in to charge whenever they are not moving or using the cart. ( Please email us if you are that one hospital. We'd like to feature you on this site.)
This scenario will typically be true, even if you've looked at or have a "hot swappable " battery system, or a DC power only configuration. the problem is the charger!!!!
MOBILE WORKSTATION AVAILABILITY IS HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON THE SECOND COMPONENT, THE ABILITY OF THE POWER SYSTEM TO RECHARGE QUICKLY.
SOLUTION
The solution is a power system that has a battery that will take a "hot" charge safely without degrading and a charger large enough to optimize the battery technology.
The solution is the Howard Medical lithium iron phosphate 40 Ah battery with a 20 Ah rated charger.
The result, if you are powering a typical laptop only workstation, your AVAILABILITY RATIO is 1:6, or in other words 10 minutes of charge time will yield 1 HOUR of runtime!
If you are powering an LCD workstation the typical AVAILABILITY RATIO is 1:3, or 20 minutes of charge time will yield 1 hour of run time.
OTHER ADVANTAGES
LOWER COST OF OWNERSHIP
• The lithium phosphate battery has a comparable initial cost to NiMH
or Li-Ion
• 17 times the cycle life of lead acid batteries
• No downtime to replace batteries
WEIGHT
• Lithium battery weighs 14 lbs. vs. the typical weight of a 55 Ah SLA
battery of 44 lbs. resulting in a much lighter workstation.
LIFE CYCLE
• Rated to have 80% capacity remaining after 2500 full discharges 60%
after 5100
CHARGING PRACTICES
• Tolerant of poor charging practices. Not compromised ( Like SLA) by
deep discharges.
SAFE
• Will not burn. Meets the Joint Commission guidelines for shorted
cell and overcharge monitoring.
• Does not have an outgas potential as with SLA batteries
